Kurt's guitar sells for $100,000

A guitar used by the former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain on the band's first US tour has been sold at auction for £68,000.

The damaged Fender Mustang, previously owned by the , was sold for $100,000 (approximately £68,000) to an unidentified private collector.

Sluggo, a punk guitarist, had been in possession of the Seattle icon's instrument for a number of years after trading it with Cobain for a working guitar.

The Mustang was later displayed by Seattle's Experience Music Project.

Jacob McMurray, senior curator at the Project, told Yahoo Music: "It’s a really cool looking guitar.

"It’s smashed and held together with duct tape and Kurt Cobain wrote on it. There’s not a huge amount of broken Nirvana guitars out there."

The guitar is the second-highest selling piece of Cobain memorabilia to date, following the £89,000 sale of his Mosrite Gospel Mark IV guitar at an auction in 2006.

Earlier this year, a scorched Fender Stratocaster - set alight by Jimi Hendrix during a London concert in 1967 - sold for approximately £337,000.
